Talent Management is much more than just the recruitment of talented individuals into your business.
Talent Management is defined by the CIPD as “the systematic attraction, identification, development, engagement, retention and deployment of those individuals who are of particular value to an organisation, either in view of their ‘high potential’ for the future of because they are fulfilling business/operation-critical roles.”
If you employ one or more people within your business, Talent Management should be a part of your leadership role. Making sure that you are identifying, developing, engaging and retaining the key people within your business is critical to your future growth.
From your very first hire, right through to the fiftieth, having a structured plan for that role and that person will help you build a more productive business, faster and more effectively. Know what you want them to achieve, now and in the future. Have a plan to ensure that they become engaged with the business purpose and values as soon as possible, and stick to it. Give them time to learn and then stretch them, support their growth with challenging opportunities and projects that will develop their skills and potential. And make sure you don’t forget about them when it is time to recruit the next person. Utilise their knowledge and skills in the recruitment and training of the new employee.
Having one eye on your business plan and one eye on the talent inside and outside of your business will help you to understand what skills and attitudes you need for each phase of growth. Knowing when you will need different skill sets will help you build a relationship with a high-quality recruiter who will also keep one of their eyes out for the talent that will grow your business. Having a trusted partner who understands your business cannot be underestimated.
Talent management doesn’t have to be rocket science, but it is one of the most powerful tools you can employ to fuel the growth of your business.
